My Tangra Style Chilli Chicken!

Tangra is an area of Kolkata that is historically inhabited by the Chinese migrants that came to live and work in the thriving Tanneries of times gone by. Now, Tangra is a bustling maze of Chinese restaurants serving the best of Indo-Chinese cuisine. Its literally AMAZING! One of my favourite restaurants is Golden Joy and the dish you must try is…Chilli Chicken best served with egg fried rice. Simply Delish! So here is my recreation of that dish for all to enjoy!

Serves 3 people or 2 if you’re really hungry 🙂

  • ½ kg of boneless chicken thighs
  • Half a cup of sifted corn flour
  • 4 tsp. chili power
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 x red onion
  • 1 bund of spring onions
  • 1 x large bell pepper
  • 2 – 3 green chillies
  • 3 – 4 tbsp. dark soy sauce.
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • ½ cup of water

Step 1:

Dice your chicken into bite size pieces and place in a bowl. To the bowl add the corn flour, eggs and half of the chilli powder and a shake of salt and pepper for seasoning.

Mix the batter and chicken together in the bowl making sure you get rid of all the lumps and bumps where possible.

Step 3:

Heat a frying pan with a little vegetable oil. One by one place the battered pieces of chicken into the pan ensuring they are evenly coasted but excess batter removed. Cook until golden and crispy, then remove from the heat and leave to one side for later.

Step 3:

Once again, heat a little oil in a frying pan, once hot add the sliced onion and cook until soft. Add the sliced pepper, whites of spring onion, remaining chilli powder, a shake of black pepper and cook until slightly soft. Add all of the soy sauce and let it sizzle and reduce a tad. Add a little water and simmer for 4 – 6 minutes until reduced and syrupy. Add the honey and stir.

Step 4:

Once the sauce is nicely thickened, add the remaining chopped spring onions, sliced green chilli and return the chicken to the pan. Stir and cook until the dish is thoroughly heated through.

And there you have it! Yummy Scrummy Chilli Chicken, a sweet, hot and tangy party in the mouth that you’ll simply love. I recommend this being served with egg fried rice and Tadaaa!!!!
